A floating pennywort with white-edged leaves. Hydrocotyle ranunculoides 'Variegated' grows round scalloped leaves in bright green with creamy-white margins, carried on creeping stems that float across the surface or root along a shallow margin. It is a pond, tub and open-top plant rather than a submerged aquarium one.

Grower’s Notes

• This is a pond plant, not a submerged aquarium plant. The leaves are held above the waterline on emergent stalks. In a closed aquarium with a lid it will grow but stay poor; in a pond, tub, riparium or open-top tank it does what it is meant to.
• It spreads fast, so contain it. Every node roots, and in a pond it will cross the surface within a season. Grow it in a basket or planter if you want it to stay where you put it.
• Strong light keeps the cream margins bright. In shade the variegation fades toward plain green.
• It is hardy well below freezing at the root, so in most of the US it overwinters outdoors and returns in spring.
