Hydrocotyle verticillata normally ships as an adult plant — tall stalks, big umbrella leaves, awkward to place in a small tank. This is the same plant graded small, so the portions actually fit a nano layout and can be planted at the front rather than the back.

What You'll Receive

  • Sold as small size, bare-root plants, approx 1-2 inches portion
  • Dwarf size plant, perfect to plant in the foreground aquarium

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Umbrella Pennywort (Small Size)
  • Scientific name — Hydrocotyle verticillata
  • Also known as — Whorled Pennywort, Whorled Marshpennywort, Shield Pennywort
  • Origin — The Americas
  • Placement — Foreground to midground
  • Mature height — 2-6 inches
  • Growth rate — Fast

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Medium
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 68-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5
  • Substrate — Nutrient-rich soil or root tabs; also feeds from the water column
  • Growth habit — Amphibious creeping stem
  • Propagation — Runners

Grower's Notes

  • This is a size grade, not a dwarf variety. It is the same species as our full-size Umbrella Pennywort, supplied as young small-leaved portions. Given time and light it will grow on toward full size — trimming is what keeps it at foreground scale.
  • Bare stalks with few leaves means not enough light. Under weak lighting the stems stretch upward and the umbrella leaves thin out. Raise the intensity or move it forward rather than dosing more fertilizer.
  • Plant small clusters an inch apart. Runners close the gaps far faster than one clump grows outward, so spacing the portions out fills a foreground quicker than planting them together.
  • Trim at the substrate to hold a boundary. It spreads quickly and will cross into whatever is planted beside it.
  • Every node roots. Cut sections anywhere and pin them down until they anchor — one of the easiest plants in the catalog to multiply.

Notes

  • Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation. Unless specific, we don't guarantee aquatic plants will be free of pests, and pesticides, grow emerged, or submerge.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

Customers praised these aquatic plants for arriving healthy with "superb root systems" and thriving in tanks. Most found them easy to plant and establish quickly without melting. They adapt well both above and below water. Minor issues noted: can be "a little messy" and slightly difficult to untangle initially, with occasional dying leaves during transit.

Very healthy plants

I got two of these. Half to grow above water and half to grow in tank. All of it took immediately to my tank without melting back. Both are doing well. They arrived healthy and happy.

Amazing!

Huge fan of the Hydrocotyle family, they have an awesome collection! The plant arrived fairly healthy, there were a couple dying leaves but it's to be expected with any Hydrocotyle species, and it appears to be establishing itself well. I have it growing just under the water's surface and plan to let it grow up over the riparian section of my tank
