Want a Hygrophila that stays in the midground? Hygrophila corymbosa 'Kompakt' is the dwarf cultivar — broad bright green oval leaves on stems with much shorter internodes, so it grows into a dense low bush instead of running for the surface like standard corymbosa.

Grower’s Notes

• Short internodes are the whole point. Standard Hygrophila corymbosa stretches to 20 inches and beyond with wide gaps between leaf pairs. 'Kompakt' packs them close, which is why it holds a hedge shape where the parent plant does not — and why it fits a 10-gallon tank that the parent would swamp.
• Light keeps it compact. Under weak light the internodes lengthen and it loses the dwarf habit — trimming won't bring it back.
• Trim and replant the tops. Each cut forces side shoots, which is how a few stems become a solid midground block.
• Root tabs help noticeably. It draws from both roots and water column, and leaf size drops in inert gravel.
