Lagenandra Ovata (Malayan Sword)

Not a sword at all. Lagenandra ovata is an aroid — a relative of Cryptocoryne rather than Echinodorus — sold under the trade name Malayan Sword. Broad, ovate leaves with wavy edges run from deep green to reddish-brown on a thick creeping rhizome, and it grows slowly to a substantial size.

Grower's Notes

• Treat it like a big Cryptocoryne, not like a sword. Despite the trade name, this is an aroid with a creeping rhizome. It melts on a change of conditions the way crypts do, rebuilds from the rhizome, and resents being moved — none of which is true of an Echinodorus.
• Plant the rhizome in the substrate, shallowly. Roots down, rhizome just at or below the surface, growing points clear. This is a root feeder — it does not attach to wood or stone.
• Slow means slow. At 12-20 inches and a Slow growth rate, this is a multi-year plant. Buy it as a long-term background specimen, not to fill a gap this season.
• Color follows light. Deep green in shade, reddish-brown under stronger light. Both are healthy; the plant does not need bright light to thrive.
• Divide the rhizome to propagate. Cut a section with roots and at least two or three leaves and replant it. There are no runners and no plantlets on stalks.
