The finest-leaved Ludwigia. Ludwigia arcuata grows narrow needle-like leaves on slender arching stems — a texture closer to a Rotala than to the broad-leaved Ludwigia most tanks have — and it runs from bright green through orange to deep red as light increases. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® (tissue culture) format.

Grower's Notes

  • It is not a narrow-leaved Ludwigia repens. The trade name says otherwise, but arcuata is a separate species with genuinely needle-fine leaves. If you already own repens and want more of the same, this will look quite different beside it — which is usually the point.
  • It works in inert gravel. Unlike most red stems, arcuata takes what it needs from the water column, so consistent liquid dosing matters more than a fed substrate. Useful if you are not running aquasoil.
  • Rinse the gel off and separate the stems before planting, spacing them an inch apart. Planted as a clump the fine foliage shades itself and the lower stems rot.
  • Trim and replant the tops. Cuttings color faster than the stumps regrow.
  • The needle-fine texture reads best against broad-leaved plants and mosses — that contrast is most of the effect.
