Ludwigia Marilia

Round leaves, which is unusual for a Ludwigia. Ludwigia sp. 'Marilia' comes from the area around Marília in São Paulo and has never been assigned a species name — it is genuinely scarce in the trade. The leaves are roughly circular, about an inch across, and shift from light green to soft orange at the shoot tips under strong light.

Grower's Notes

• It gets tall and will reach the surface. Untrimmed stems pass twenty inches and start growing floating leaves across the top — attractive in an open-top tank as a natural thicket, a problem in a closed one where it shades everything below. Decide which you want and trim accordingly.
• A rare plant that is genuinely easy. Most collector stems are difficult; this one is not. Medium light and a fed substrate are enough, which makes it an unusually safe way to own something uncommon.
• Cut a stem anywhere and it branches. Partial cuttings work as well as head cuttings, so one portion multiplies quickly.
• Plant stems individually an inch apart. Bunched, the round leaves overlap and the lower sections rot.
• The round leaf shape is the reason to buy it — it reads completely differently from the narrow-leaved Ludwigia most tanks already have.

Notes

• As with many stem plants, some leaf loss or melting may occur during shipping and transition. With proper care and pruning, Ludwigia marilia adapts quickly and produces fresh submerged growth.
• Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
