Want a water lily no one else has? Nymphaea 'Wanvisa' is a variegated hybrid — pink-red petals flecked and striped with yellow, white or peach, in a pattern that changes from bloom to bloom. No two flowers are alike, and nothing about it reads like a solid-colored lily. An award-winning hardy hybrid from Dr. Nopchai Charnsilp in Thailand, and one of the most collected lilies in the hobby.

Usually grown outdoors, but not only outdoors. Leaf spread reaches 3–5 feet and it needs 12–24 inches of water above the crown, so ponds and large container water gardens suit it best. It will also grow indoors in a tank of 20 gallons and up — but flowering there takes very high, sun-like light over a long daily photoperiod, and the pads grow fast enough to need trimming often.

Planting a Hardy Lily

  • Plant in a wide, shallow container rather than the pond bed — hardy rhizomes grow horizontally, and a pot makes seasonal care and relocation far easier.
  • Set the rhizome at a 45° angle near the edge of the pot, with the crown left exposed.
  • Use heavy garden soil with 2–4 fertilizer tablets, then top with 1–2 inches of pea gravel or sand to stop the soil floating. Keep gravel clear of the crown.
  • Start with 6 inches of water above the soil and lower the pot to 12–18 inches as the plant matures.
  • Plant in early spring. Fertilize every 3–4 weeks through the growing season and remove yellowing leaves and spent blooms.

Grower's Notes

  • Never bury the crown. This is the single rule that decides whether a lily thrives or rots.
  • Light decides whether you get flowers. Outdoors that means full sun. Indoors it means a strong light run for a long day — under anything less the plant lives and pushes pads but rarely blooms, which is the most common disappointment with lilies.
  • Trim the pads. Leaves come fast and a mature plant will cover the surface and shade everything beneath it. Cutting older pads at the base keeps light in the tank and pushes the plant to flower rather than sprawl.
  • Expect the pattern to change. One plant can throw pink-red, yellow, white and peach markings across a season, shifting with temperature and light. That unpredictability is the point of growing Wanvisa — but it means no single photo represents every bloom.
  • Divide the rhizome to propagate. Lift an established plant in spring and cut the rhizome into sections, each with a growing point and roots. Water lilies do not spread by runners.
  • It goes dormant over winter and returns in spring. A bare pot in January is normal, not a dead plant.

Notes

  • Bloom color and variegation may vary depending on lighting, water temperature, and fertilization. Allow the plant time to establish before expecting consistent blooming patterns.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

Customers praised these hardy water lilies for arriving "beautifully packaged and healthy" with fast growth. Plants ship with strong roots, leaves, and sometimes flower buds. Most report excellent survival rates and blooming. One customer noted receiving a yellow bloom instead of the expected red color.

Hardy Wanvisa water lily tubers

Just received 5 tubers for these hardy wanvisa water lillies! They arrived in great shape, about the size of my index finger & each had 2-3 leaves. Got them potted & in the pond. Doubt I will get any blooms this year, but if they get their feet by fall we should be in for a heckuva show next summer!

Weather?

I received the healthy Rhyzomes at a great price and “planted” 8 days ago. It has been an unseasonably cold spring and cool summer. Barely a week of 80 thus far and average 70 degrees. My pond temp barely hits 70 day and down to 60 nights. . . Not sure if I will have pads and or blooms this year!

Will any of them flourish in only 6-8" water depth? It's a small pondless waterfall but I would love to have a waterlily.

Aquarium Plants Factory

Hi there, honest answer: 6-8" is on the shallow side for the Wanvisa - as a hardy water lily, it does best with 12-24" of water over the crown once mature (young plants can start at 6" and be lowered gradually as they grow, but 6-8" long-term would likely stunt growth and limit blooming). The bigger concern for a pondless waterfall specifically is water movement - hardy water lilies prefer calm, still water, and the constant flow/turbulence from a waterfall feature can stress them and discourage blooming. If you have a calmer pocket away from the main flow, it's worth a try, but for best results a still container or a separate low-flow area would work much better. Happy to help you find a better fit if you let us know more about your setup!

Hello I was wondering if lily's can grow in a aquarium fish tank also how long do the stems grow do you think it is possible to to grow in the fish tank. Thank you for your time

Aquarium Plants Factory

Water lilies like Red Hardy (Nymphaea Wanvisa) are technically pond/bog plants rather than true aquarium plants - they're grown from a tuber and their leaves and flowers are meant to reach and float on the water's surface, with stems that will keep growing until they get there. In a typical aquarium they can work for a while (especially in a tall or open-top tank), but they tend to get quite large over time, need bright light, and don't appreciate being trimmed back the way submersed aquarium plants do. They're really best suited to ponds, tubs, or very tall/open aquariums where the leaves can actually reach the surface.

Which variety of the hardy water lily do you recommend for a small water garden? I’m planning on using a whiskey barrel cut in half and place the potted water lily into the water filled whiskey barrel. Therefore, I don’t want a variety that will get huge.
