Persicaria Kawagoeanum

It arrives green and turns orange. Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' grows narrow willow-shaped leaves that stay bright green in our emersed nursery beds, then shift to glowing orange-red and pink once submerged under strong light with CO₂. The transformation is the whole point of the plant — and the reason the stems in the bag look nothing like the photographs.

Grower's Notes

• Green stems on arrival are correct, not a mistake. We grow this emersed, where the leaves are plain green and the stems sturdy. The orange-red develops over several weeks of submerged growth under strong light — judge the plant on its new growth, not on what comes out of the bag.
• Color is what separates it from Persicaria sp. 'Sao Paulo'. The two are very similar in leaf shape and size, and this plant is sometimes sold under that name. Once colored up the difference is clear: Kawagoeanum goes orange-red, Sao Paulo goes pink-purple. It also circulates as 'Red' and as Polygonum 'Kawagoneum'.
• Older stems go leggy and shed their lower leaves. Trim the tops and replant them, discarding the bare bases — that is how the group stays dense.
• Feed both ways. It roots strongly but also takes nutrients from the water, so substrate tabs plus regular liquid dosing produce the best color.
• In an open-top tank, wabi-kusa or paludarium it grows shrub-like above the surface and can flower if left untrimmed.

Notes

• This plant ships in its emersed form with green leaves. Color transformation will occur once adapted to submerged conditions with adequate CO₂ and strong lighting. Trimming and replanting top portions helps maintain a fresh, healthy appearance.
