Pogostemon Stellatus

A starburst at every node. Pogostemon stellatus whorls fine needle-like leaves around the stem so each node opens like a small explosion, and under strong light with CO₂ the whole plant shifts from green through pink and purple into orange. It is one of the most striking stem plants in the hobby and one of the least tolerant of an unstable tank.

Grower’s Notes

• Stability matters more than any single parameter. Stellatus reacts to swings in CO₂, light period or fertilisation faster than almost anything else in the tank — it will drop leaves in a week from a change others shrug off. Set the tank up first, then add this plant.
• Melt after shipping is normal and can look total. Leave the stems planted; new growth comes from the nodes.
• Trim the tops and replant them; side shoots from the trimmed stem thicken the group.
• Plant stems individually an inch apart. Bunched, the lower stems shade out and rot.
• Want the leaf texture without the demands? Pogostemon Octopus keeps a similar form and stays green, and Pogostemon Deccanensis is a far more forgiving background plant.
