Pogostemon Deccanensis (formerly known as Pogostemon Erectus)

Pogostemon Deccanensis, also known as the Indian Star plant, a striking aquatic plant that stands out for its unique characteristics. This plant was known as Pogostemon Erectus for a long time but later correctly identified as Pogostemon Deccanensis. This versatile plant is perfect for adding texture and vibrant greenery to your aquarium.

Key Features:

  • Appearance: The light green, needle-like, narrow leaves grow densely on the stems, forming compact groups of conifer-like stems, 15-40 cm tall and 1-3 cm wide. This creates a dense, bushy appearance that adds depth and interest to your aquascape.
  • Color: Its bright green hue provides a refreshing contrast to darker or red-toned plants, making it a standout addition to any underwater landscape.
  • Growth Rate: With moderate growth and vigorous roots, this plant can flourish quickly under the right conditions, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
  • Light Requirements: Thrives under medium to high light (at least 0.5 W/litre), which helps the plant stay compact for a longer period, ensuring it maintains its vibrant color and healthy growth.
  • CO2 Requirements: While CO2 supplementation is beneficial, it is not mandatory. Enhanced growth and overall health can be achieved with CO2.
  • Water Parameters: Prefers soft to moderately hard water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, suitable for most tropical aquariums.
  • Temperature: Ideal for temperatures between 22-28°C (72-82°F), making it compatible with a wide range of aquarium setups.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated by cutting the stems and replanting the cuttings, allowing you to expand your plant collection effortlessly.

Placement and Care:

  • Background Plant: Pogostemon Deccanensis is suitable as a background plant and creates a wonderful focal point in both smaller and larger groups.
  • Frequent Pruning: The plant will need frequent pruning to maintain its compact shape. Cut-off shoots will easily start growing when planted.
  • Consistent Fertilization: Regular fertilization with macro and micronutrients supports healthy growth.
  • Stable Water Parameters: Maintain stable water parameters to avoid stress on the plant.
  • Emergent Growth: When cultivated emersed, Pogostemon Deccanensis forms beautiful candle-like flower spikes with a characteristic smell, provided it receives sufficient light.

Origin and History:

Pogostemon Deccanensis was originally collected for aquaristic purposes in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Over the years, it has been used in many aquaria, mainly in the USA and increasingly in Europe. Its submersed growth habit is more upright and larger in dimensions compared to similar plants. The emersed form of Pogostemon Deccanensis further distinguishes it, with highly distinct, decorative flower spikes with violet flowers, unlike the inconspicuous flowers of other species. Additionally, Pogostemon Erectus has leaves reminiscent of pine needles with visible hairs on its stamina, a feature that sets it apart.

Enhance your aquarium with our versatile selection of high-quality aquatic plants, available in three convenient formats:

  • Fresh-Cut Plants: Includes approximately 6+ loose, fresh-cut stems without roots. Perfect for flexible planting arrangements.

  • Fresh-Cut Potted: About 6+ fresh-cut stems without roots, securely potted in a net pot with rockwool, ensuring stability and healthy growth.

Pogostemon Deccanensis (Pogostemon Erectus) Growing Great!

i’ve had these a few weeks now and they have been steadily putting on growth in my modified walstad-style tank (tidal 35 filter, foxfarm ocean forest potting soil substrate-sand cap, twinstar 45b II at ~80% power, apologies-i don’t keep track of my parameters-but i use distilled water with shrimp mineral according to instructions to re-mineralize and easy green every couple weeks when i think of it because i have houseplants growing in there too.) i keep medaka and shrimp so bioload is modest. i’m very happy with this plant, i buy most of my plants from apf and generally have had good success.
