Grower's Notes

  • Light angle decides the shape. Under medium light the stems grow straight up. Under strong light directly overhead they stay short and lean sideways, which is why aquascapers sometimes use this variety low and trimmed rather than as a background stem.
  • Rinse and portion the tissue culture before planting. Wash the gel off completely, then split the clump into groups of three or four plantlets. Planted as one mass, the center rots before it roots.
  • The first submersed leaves look different. Emersed-grown plantlets have thicker, rounder foliage. New underwater growth is narrower and brighter — that is the plant adapting, not failing.
  • Trim above a node and it doubles. Each cut stem sends out two side shoots, so a few rounds of trimming turn six starter plantlets into a solid green thicket.
  • It grows fast enough to compete with algae. Heavy nutrient uptake makes this a useful starter plant in a newly cycled tank, where it soaks up ammonia and nitrate that would otherwise feed an algae bloom.

There's a lot in that little cup!

As I unrolled and separated this from its little cup I was pleasantly surprised how good of a shape this plant was! Not a dead or dying leaf to be seen. Also, how much of it there was in there! Excellent! Well worth it and I will buy some again for my other tanks!
