Schismatoglottis Prietoi

Schismatoglottis prietoi is the plant to buy when Anubias is too slow. It is the only species in its genus that grows fully submersed — endemic to fast-flowing rivers in the Philippines — and it looks like a softer, quicker Anubias with pale green wavy-edged leaves.

Grower's Notes

• It is the faster alternative to Anubias. Slow by general standards, but noticeably quicker than Anubias at a similar look and size — which is the reason most people buy it. Softer leaves, same low-light tolerance.
• Plant it or tie it — both work. Set in substrate it sends out runners and spreads as ground cover. Attached to wood or stone it behaves as an epiphyte. Do not bury the rhizome either way.
• It tolerates genuinely poor light. This grows in shaded forest rivers. Low light is not a compromise for this plant; it is where it does best and where algae will not outrun it.
• Nano-sized on purpose. At two to four inches it suits small tanks and shrimp setups where a full-size Anubias would swallow the layout.
• The flower smells unpleasant. Like many aroids it produces a single white spathe with an odor at the base. Emersed growers should know that in advance; submersed it rarely flowers.
