Selaginella Kraussiana

Not an aquarium plant. Selaginella kraussiana — Krauss' Spikemoss — is a terrestrial creeping plant that forms dense, moss-like carpets of soft fern-textured foliage. It belongs on the damp floor of a terrarium, vivarium or paludarium, not underwater. Given humidity it spreads quickly into a convincing woodland-floor mat.

Grower's Notes

• Humidity matters more than anything else. In a closed terrarium or a well-misted vivarium it spreads into a dense carpet within weeks. In open room air it dries, browns and dies back — this is the one thing that decides success with it.
• Keep it damp, not wet. It wants moist substrate and still air, but sitting in standing water rots the creeping stems.
• Low indirect light is enough. Bright direct light bleaches and scorches the fine foliage.
• It makes excellent microhabitat cover for dart frogs, small geckos and terrarium invertebrates, and the low mat gives them somewhere to move under.
• Divide an established clump or take cuttings to spread it around a setup — every piece roots where it touches damp substrate.
