A moss-like carpet that isn't a moss. Selaginella kraussiana 'Mini' is a compact spikemoss forming dense mats of tiny fern-like leaves — fast spreading, fine textured, and built for humid enclosures rather than aquariums.

What You'll Receive

Sold as loose fresh-cut plants, bunched plants, or potted plants:

  • Fresh-Cut Plants: Approximately 6 individual stems without root
  • Bunched Plants: Approximately 6 stems without root bundled with foam and a plant weight
  • Potted Plants: Approximately 6 stems without root potted in rockwool and net pot

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Mini Spikemoss, Mini Clubmoss, Mini Club Moss
  • Scientific name — Selaginella kraussiana 'Mini'
  • True aquatic — No. Terrestrial creeping plant; not suitable for full submersion
  • Placement — Terrarium, vivarium or paludarium foreground, above the waterline
  • Growth habit — Non-Aquatic. Creeping, fast spreading

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner in a humid enclosure
  • Light — Medium to high, avoiding direct intense sunlight
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Humidity — High. Thrives in enclosed tropical setups
  • Substrate — Required. A nutrient substrate sustains growth and color
  • Propagation — Division or stem cuttings

Grower's Notes

  • It is not an aquarium plant. Kraussiana grows above the waterline in terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. Fully submerged it dies — the moss-like look tempts people into planting it in tanks, and it does not survive there.
  • It spreads fast for a plant this fine. Gaps close quickly into a continuous carpet, which makes it far more practical as terrarium ground cover than true mosses.
  • Keep humidity high and the substrate damp. It is more forgiving than S. erythropus, but still declines quickly in dry air.
  • Good microhabitat for small reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates — dense enough to shelter in, low enough to see over.
  • Divide it to propagate. Any rooted section re-establishes readily.

Notes

  • Pictures are a sample representation; actual plants may vary in size and color depending on growing conditions. Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will be pest-free, pesticide-free, or grown in submerged form.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
