5 Things People Get Wrong About Planted Tanks

A lot of people rule out planted tanks before they even try, usually based on assumptions picked up from a handful of intimidating photos online. Here are the five most common misconceptions, and why they don't hold up.

"You Need CO2 Injection"

CO2 helps plants grow faster and lets you keep more demanding species, but it's an upgrade, not a requirement. Plenty of genera — Anubias, Java Fern, Cryptocoryne, Java Moss — grow just fine under a basic light with no CO2 system at all.

"It's Too Expensive to Start"

High-end aquascapes with imported hardscape and specialty lighting can get pricey, but a first tank doesn't need any of that. A basic light, some substrate, and a handful of easy plants is enough to get started — the expensive gear is something you grow into later, if you want it, not a prerequisite.

"Plants Will Just Die Right Away"

Some initial melt or leaf loss after planting is completely normal — it's the plant adjusting from how it was grown to your tank's specific water, not a sign you've failed. Pick beginner-friendly species to start, and most of what looks like dying is actually just the transition phase.

"You Need a Green Thumb"

Unlike garden plants, most easy aquarium species don't need daily attention — no watering schedule, no weeding, no worrying about frost. A weekly check-in for trimming and fertilizing is usually all that's needed for a low-tech setup.

"More Light Is Always Better"

Stronger light without matching nutrients and CO2 is one of the most common ways beginners end up fighting algae. More light just means plants (and algae) grow faster — it's not automatically an upgrade if the rest of the tank can't keep pace.

A Good Starting Point

If you want to sidestep most of these mistakes entirely, the Easy Low-Light Beginner Aquarium Plant Bundle is a curated set of species chosen specifically because they tolerate exactly the kind of basic setup most first tanks start with.
