The Cabomba Care Guide: Furcata, Super Magenta and Why Red Cabomba Is Hard

Cabomba is sold as a single plant and it is not. The green forms are undemanding. The red and magenta forms are among the most difficult stem plants you can buy, and treating them the same way is why most people fail with them.

Know which one you have

  • Cabomba aquatica (Green Cabomba) — medium to high light, CO2 recommended but not essential, intermediate. Forgiving.
  • Cabomba furcata (Red Cabomba) — high light, CO2 required, advanced. Unforgiving.
  • Cabomba furcata 'Super Magenta' — the same demands as furcata, selected for deeper magenta and purple tone.

If you have failed with Cabomba before, check which one it was. Failing with furcata in a low-tech tank is the expected outcome, not bad luck.

What red Cabomba actually needs

Four conditions, and it needs all four at once. Missing any one of them causes the same result — the stem thins, sheds from the bottom, and disintegrates.

High light. Not medium. The red pigment is produced under strong light, and under anything less the plant goes green, stretches and thins.

Pressurised CO2, running stably. This is the requirement people try to skip. Liquid carbon products do not substitute. More importantly the CO2 must be stable — furcata reacts badly to a fluctuating level, and a solenoid that comes on late or a diffuser that clogs will cost you the stand.

Soft, acidic water. pH 6.0–6.8 and low hardness. In hard alkaline tap water furcata struggles regardless of light and CO2, and this is the condition most often overlooked.

Consistent dosing, iron included. Fast growth means a constant nutrient draw. Nitrate should be present but lean — a heavily fertilised tank pushes it back toward green.

Stability matters more than any single value

The characteristic Cabomba failure is sudden. A stand that looked fine on Monday sheds its leaves and comes apart by Friday, usually after a large water change, a filter clean, a CO2 interruption or a light change.

Furcata does not tolerate step changes. Make adjustments gradually — smaller, more frequent water changes rather than a single large one, and no more than one variable altered at a time.

Handle it as little as possible

The whorled leaves detach when squeezed. Gripping a stem in the middle to plant it strips that section bare, and those nodes do not refoliate.

Hold the very base of the stem with tweezers, plant it, and leave it. Expect some shedding in transit and during the first week regardless — that is the plant, not the shipment.

Trimming, and why the bottom never recovers

Cabomba grows from the tip and abandons the base. Lower sections go bare and brown and stay that way.

Manage it as a rolling replant rather than a permanent planting: cut the healthy top four to six inches, replant those tips, and discard the bare stems. A stand kept this way stays dense; one left alone becomes a row of bare sticks with green tops.

Replant tips in small groups with a little space between them. Packed tight, the inner stems shade out and shed.

Fine leaves collect everything

The finely divided foliage traps detritus and is a favourite anchor for hair algae and black beard algae. Once algae has taken hold in a Cabomba stand it is effectively impossible to remove without destroying the plant — you cannot scrub it and it will not survive aggressive spot treatment.

Prevention is the only realistic approach: decent flow through the stand, regular water changes, and prompt removal of any affected stem.

A note on state restrictions

Some Cabomba species, particularly Cabomba caroliniana, are regulated or prohibited in a number of U.S. states and other countries because of their invasive history. Check your local rules before ordering and never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
