CO2 injection is the piece of equipment that generates the most questions from newer hobbyists — partly because it sounds intimidating, and partly because it's genuinely optional for a large share of planted tanks. Here's how to tell if you actually need one.
Plants use CO2 for photosynthesis, and in a closed aquarium there's usually far less of it dissolved in the water than plants could use if it were available. Adding CO2 removes that bottleneck, which is why high-tech tanks with CO2 injection grow noticeably faster and denser than the same plants without it.
If you're growing easy, low-light plants — Anubias, Java Fern, Cryptocoryne, Bacopa — no, not really. These genera evolved to tolerate CO2-poor conditions and grow fine without injection. CO2 becomes necessary when you want fast-growing, high-light, colorful genera like Rotala to actually thrive rather than just survive.
A CO2 system generally means a pressurized tank, a regulator to control flow, and a diffuser to dissolve the gas into the water. It's more equipment to manage than a low-tech tank, and it needs to be dialed in carefully — too much CO2 can stress fish, too little won't give plants the boost you're paying for.
Liquid carbon supplements offer a lighter-touch alternative to full CO2 injection — not as effective, but enough of a boost for some hobbyists to skip the equipment entirely while still seeing better growth than a completely unsupplemented tank.
If you're considering CO2 specifically to unlock color and fast growth, Rotala Rotundifolia is a great litmus test plant — it will survive without CO2 but genuinely transforms with it, so you'll know quickly whether the investment is paying off.
