Bare-root Plants

Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' is a unique and compact variety of the popular Anubias barteri species, offering an elegant option for aquascaping freshwater aquariums. This variant is characterized by its elongated, pointed leaves that present a refined, lance-like structure. Well-suited for a range of aquarium environments, Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' is known for its adaptability, hardiness, and ease of maintenance, making it suitable for both novice aquarists and experienced aquascaping enthusiasts.

Morphological Features:

  • Leaf Structure: This variant features narrow, pointed leaves that grow in a compact rosette, contributing to its unique, sharp appearance.
  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing and small in stature, 'Short & Sharp' remains compact, making it ideal for various tank sizes and aquascape layouts, from nano aquariums to larger systems.

Cultivation Conditions:

  • Light Requirements: Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' is a low-light plant, capable of thriving under low to moderate lighting. Its adaptability to different lighting conditions makes it ideal for low-tech aquariums, while moderate lighting will enhance its growth rate.
  • Water Parameters: This species exhibits a wide tolerance for water parameters, thriving in pH levels between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures ranging from 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C).
  • CO2 and Nutrients: Although not dependent on CO2 supplementation, the addition of CO2 and a nutrient-rich environment can enhance growth and foliage health. Liquid fertilizers or root tabs can support optimal development in nutrient-poor substrates.

Aquascaping and Ecological Role:

  • Placement in Aquascapes: Given its compact size and distinct leaf shape, Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' can be effectively positioned as a foreground or midground plant. Its unique morphology provides contrast against broader-leaved species and complements a variety of aquascaping styles, including jungle, Dutch, and nature-inspired layouts.
  • Habitat Enhancement: When anchored to hardscape elements such as driftwood, rocks, or other surfaces, it not only enhances visual aesthetics but also offers microhabitats and shelter for aquarium fauna, such as small fish, invertebrates, and shrimp.

Propagation and Cultivation Techniques:

The plant propagates through rhizome division. To achieve propagation, cut sections of the rhizome ensuring that each piece has several leaves attached. It is critical to avoid burying the rhizome in substrate, as this can lead to decay. Attachment to hardscape elements using aquarium-safe thread, glue, or other securing techniques is recommended.

Advantages and Benefits:

  • Low Maintenance: Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' requires minimal care and pruning due to its slow growth rate and resilient nature.
  • Versatility in Aquascaping: Its compact growth habit and unique leaf morphology make it suitable for a wide range of aquarium styles, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits to aquascapes.
  • Ecological Stability: It contributes to a balanced ecosystem within the aquarium by providing hiding spots and contributing to the biological filtration process through nutrient uptake.

Conclusion:

Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' is an exceptional choice for aquarists seeking a plant that combines both aesthetic appeal and robust growth characteristics. Its ease of cultivation, along with its versatile aquascaping applications, make it a valuable addition to any freshwater aquarium. For those aiming to create a visually striking aquascape with minimal maintenance requirements, Anubias barteri 'Short & Sharp' offers an ideal solution, enhancing both the biological balance and visual composition of aquatic environments.
