Emersed Growth: Bare-root Plant

Want an Anubias that actually stands out? Anubias Butterfly has broad, wing-shaped leaves that flare out like a butterfly mid-flight — a genuinely different silhouette from the round-leaved Anubias everyone else stocks, and just as close to unkillable.

What You’ll Receive

  • Sold as a Bare-root Plant, Potted Plant, or Bare-root Mother Plant
  • Bare-root Plant | regular size, roots developed loose plants
  • Potted Plant | regular size, roots developed plants with net pot and rock wool
  • Bare-root Mother Plant | Big Rhizome, Huge Mother Size Plant

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Butterfly Anubias
  • Scientific nameAnubias barteri 'Butterfly'
  • Placement — Midground, on wood or stone
  • Mature height — 6–10 in
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner. As tough as any Anubias
  • Light — Low to medium. Shade suits it; bright light means algae on slow leaves
  • CO₂ — Not required. It grows at the same steady pace either way
  • Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Feeding — Root and water column
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower’s Notes

  • Never bury the rhizome. Roots can go into substrate; the rhizome cannot. Buried, it rots — the most common way an Anubias is lost. Tie or glue it to hardscape with the rhizome exposed.
  • The mother plant option is worth considering. A big established rhizome can be divided into several plants immediately, which works out cheaper per plant than buying singles.
  • Keep it shaded. Growth is slow enough that algae colonises the broad leaves faster than the plant replaces them — and those wide leaves collect more light than a nana.
  • Divide by cutting the rhizome with a blade, leaving at least three leaves per section. Shorter sections stall.

Notes

  • Photos are for reference; leaf size, count and shape vary with growing conditions.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

Huge Anubias

I found APF while tracking down Echinodorus horizontalis , even found a dwarf version! Bought during the buy two get third for free sale. Never bought from APF, don’t let the “factory” name fool you, these are extremely good quality, crazy big, especially the slow growing Anubias. All my tanks are planted(9 tanks ). Pics are Anubias with Echinodorus horizontalis , and the paludarium has the swords. All came green with not even a brown spot, beyond my expectations.

Great plants

Second time ordering from them and the plants came in great shape and well packaged. They were way more developed then I could imagined and they look great in the aquarium.

Very happy

Beautiful plant! Way bigger than I expected. The roots looked trimmed and very healthy. Thriving in my tank so far. I attached to a rock with fishing line. Hopefully won't be too shadowed when my swords get big. No pests. I ordered over 100 dollars so I received free shipping. So worth it. I was able to spend the money on more plants and not waste it on shipping. This is my second time ordering from here and will never order from anyone else again. Always generous portions and often an extra plant thrown in. I have had nothing but top quality plants from here Definitely take advantage of the buy 2 get one free whenever possible. I didn't on this plant as I only wanted one but in hindsight wished i had anyway.

I did a bulk purchase for the first time on this site and I’m quite pleased, I already have more items in my basket ready to order.

Mother plant

I got the mother plant 'size' of this plant, and it is really pretty! I took one star off only because I think it is a little small as a mother plant (relative to the mature size I expect from this variety), but I definitely don't regret buying it. It is a low-growing variety, so as a mother plant it's more lush (11 leaves on a rhizome less than 6 inches long!) than it is huge (if that makes sense). It arrived super healthy and green, definitely not looking like it had spent two days in transit. It's a great size as a low-growing mid ground plant for a taller but narrow aquarium like a 55g...it gives a sense of depth. In the full tank shot I attached, the butterfly is in the center foreground.

Beautiful!

These arrived perfect and 2 looked stunning in my 10 gallon tank. They are the large leafed clusters that are the focal point of my tank.

Close-up of Piptospatha ridleyi showing unique light and dark green mottled leaf patterns similar to Bucephalandra.
A cluster of pink Bacopa salzmannii stems used as a colorful midground accent in a planted tank.
Close-up of Echinodorus Pink Miracle leaf detail highlighting the unique pink to reddish-pink hues and light veining.
