Anubias Congensis Broad Leaf

Format: Bare-root Plants

Price
$7.99

The biggest-leaved Anubias we carry. Anubias congensis 'Broad Leaf' grows large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves in deep green on a plant reaching ten to fourteen inches — one of the few Anubias that genuinely works as a background plant.

What You'll Receive

  • Bare-root plants | loose, bare-root plants with approx. 6 leaf
  • Rooted potted | potted plants with approx. 6 leaf

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Broad Leaf Congensis Anubias
  • Scientific name — Anubias congensis 'Broad Leaf'
  • Origin — West and Central Africa
  • Placement — Midground to background, attached to hardscape
  • Mature height — 10-14 inches
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Low to medium. Strong light means algae on broad, slow-turning leaves.
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5
  • Substrate — Not required. Epiphyte — attach the rhizome to driftwood or rock and never bury it.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious; also grows emersed, so it suits paludariums
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • This is a species in its own right, not a barteri variety. Anubias congensis stands separately in the genus, and the Broad Leaf form is the largest-leaved Anubias we stock. Plan a 10-gallon tank or bigger and give it a back-of-layout position.
  • Never bury the rhizome — including when dividing. Roots can go into substrate; the horizontal stem cannot. Cut divisions should be attached to hardscape, not replanted into gravel.
  • Big leaves are why fish leave it alone. Thick, unpalatable foliage means most herbivorous fish and invertebrates ignore it, which is why it survives in tanks that shred softer planting.
  • Wipe the leaves occasionally. A broad surface on a plant that turns over this slowly accumulates algae and debris it cannot shed.
  • Divide with a clean blade, keeping several leaves and some roots per section.
