Height from an Anubias, sterile. Anubias congensis grows long, sword-like leaves upright to ten to fourteen inches — one of the few in the genus that can hold a background position. This is the tissue-culture format, so it arrives free of snails, algae and pesticide residue.

Grower's Notes

• This is a species in its own right, not a barteri variety. Anubias congensis stands separately in the genus, which is why it reaches two to three times the height of nana or petite. Plan a 10-gallon tank or larger and mount it toward the back.
• Anubias is algae-tolerant, not algae-resistant. It grows far too slowly to outcompete anything — what protects it is shade. Low light starves the algae; that is the whole mechanism.
• Never bury the rhizome. Roots can go into substrate; the rhizome cannot. Buried, it rots.
• Rinse the gel off with aquarium or dechlorinated water, not tap, and separate the plantlets before attaching.
• Tissue-culture plantlets start small. Reaching ten inches from this size takes years on a plant that adds a leaf a month.
