Anubias Supernova

Want length and movement from an Anubias? Supernova grows long, wavy, glossy leaves rather than the round or spade shapes the genus is known for — a hybrid of Anubias heterophylla developed at the Aquatic Plant Center nursery in Thailand. Same near-indestructible rhizome underneath.

Grower’s Notes

• Pick the size for the job. The small bare-root is a grow-out plant for a nano tank; the mother plant is a finished centerpiece. Anubias adds roughly a leaf a month, so the gap between them is years of growth, not weeks.
• Never bury the rhizome. Roots can go into substrate; the rhizome cannot. Buried, it rots — the most common way an Anubias is lost.
• The long wavy leaves catch flow and move with it, which is most of the appeal — place it where there is some current rather than in a dead corner.
• A mother plant divides into several plants immediately. Cut the rhizome with a clean blade, keeping at least three leaves per section.
• Keep it shaded and wipe the leaves occasionally. Broad glossy leaves show algae clearly.
