Want a centrepiece today rather than in a year? The Amazon Sword Mother Plant is a mature XL specimen — 13 inches or more — that fills a background the moment it goes in. Swords are slow, so buying one already grown is the only way to skip the wait.

What You’ll Receive

  • Sold as a mother XL size, approx. 13 inches or more in height
  • Bare-root plants | Approx. 1-2 loose plants with root
  • Bunched plants | Approx. 1-2 plants with root, bundled with foam, and lead weight
  • Potted plants | Approx. 1-2 plants with root, potted with net pot and Rockwool

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Amazon Sword
  • Scientific nameEchinodorus bleheri
  • Also known asEchinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae'
  • Placement — Background or centrepiece
  • Mature height — 16–24 in
  • Growth rate — Medium

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Medium
  • CO₂ — Recommended, not required
  • Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.5–7.5
  • Substrate — Required. Heavy root feeder — root tabs are essential in inert gravel
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed
  • Propagation — Plantlets on aerial floral stalks

Grower’s Notes

  • Give it a tank with real depth. A plant this size in a shallow aquarium grows into the lid, bends over and shades everything around it. 29 gallons is a sensible minimum.
  • Plant the crown at the substrate line, never below it. A buried crown rots, and that is how most newly planted swords are lost.
  • Root tabs are not optional. Swords feed almost entirely through their roots, and liquid fertiliser does very little for them. Small pale new leaves means root nutrition, nine times out of ten.
  • It propagates from aerial stalks, not runners. A mature sword sends a floral stalk upward or arching across the tank, carrying plantlets along its length. Let each plantlet develop three or four leaves and visible roots, then cut it free and plant it — a mother plant this size will produce them.
  • Expect the emersed leaves to melt back over two to four weeks while it converts. The submersed leaves that replace them are longer and thinner. Leave it alone through that.

Notes

  • Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation. Unless specific, we don't guarantee aquatic plants will be free of pests, and pesticides, grow emerged, or submerge.
  • Some aquatic plants are restricted in certain U.S. states — check before ordering, and never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

Not what I ordered

All plants arrived healthy, wrapped in heat reflective foil. The Val Americana was ok. I also ordered a mother sword plant. But got two bunches of immature swords instead. A mother plant is huge, often with attached offspring,as I have bought in the past.

No roots!

I took advantage of your 2 plus one Amazon Sword Plant special and they did arrive in good shape. However, when I took them out of the shipping container I was surprised they had almost no roots, less than 5mm! Even the foam and lead at the bottom of the plants was attached above the base of the plants by about 5mm. I really hope these plants make it since they do look fantastic in my aquarium.

Say delivered, but I did not receive this order. I went to my neighbor's and no one knows anything !!!

I'm very upset b.ecause I have a new 75 gallon aquarium all set up and I was wanting on those plants !

I think I should have to sign for my delivery s from now on.

How sad that the delivery people cannot read 1633 Route 20 E Durham NY 12423

I feel like I threw my money out the window... I'm an RN/RRT and I save lives for a living. To think either my neighbors are shady or the delivery service is incompetent is disturbing on all levels !!!

After a few emails plant factory has agreed to replace my order completely.

After all, it was clearly delivered to the wrong address.

How unfortunate that people cannot read labels and are careless about other people's deliveries. If it has been the carriers package, you can believe the package would have delivered to the correct address.
Thank you plant factory and I look forward to my order . I have a new 75 gallon aquarium.

Would you kindly explain the difference in more detail between the 3 order options for the Amazon Sword Mother XL - Bare-root Plants, Rooted Bunched, and Rooted Potted, and also the planting procedures for each, including any benefits the 3 options might have over each other. I have a well established 180 gal freshwater tank with a gravel substrate, and would appreciate any help and suggestions you might have for maintaining a healthy and lush planted environment as I have always had issues with stem plants.

Thanks in advance ...

Peter

Aquarium Plants Factory

Happy to break this down! All three options are the same plant, just prepared differently for shipping: the Bare-root option arrives as loose plants with just the root exposed (no substrate media attached), so you'll plant it directly into your gravel yourself. The Rooted Bunched option comes with a few plants bundled together with foam and a small weight to help hold them in place until roots establish - handy if you want to anchor them quickly without burying much. The Rooted Potted option arrives already growing in a net pot with rock wool around the roots, which protects the root system in transit and lets you either plant the whole net pot in your substrate or gently remove the rock wool first and plant the roots directly - potted tends to have the least transplant shock since the roots are already established and undisturbed.

For a 180-gallon tank with a gravel substrate, any of the three will do well long-term. Since you've had trouble with stem plants, the good news is Amazon Sword is a root-feeding rosette plant rather than a stem plant, so it's generally much more forgiving. To plant: bury the roots and crown in the gravel but keep the crown (where the leaves emerge) above the substrate line so it doesn't rot. Root tabs pushed into the gravel near the root zone make a big difference for this plant since it's a heavy root feeder, and moderate to high lighting will help it fill out. Given the size of your tank, it should have plenty of room to grow into a nice centerpiece plant over time.
