Echinodorus Red Chameleon

Green above water, red below it. Echinodorus 'Red Chameleon' is grown emersed in our greenhouse, where its leaves are green — the red develops quickly once it is submerged. It stays smaller and more compact than Green Chameleon, which makes it the one to choose for a small or medium tank.

Care

Grower's Notes

• It arrives green. That is correct. We grow it emersed in a hydroponic greenhouse, where the leaves are green. The red appears on submerged growth over the following days and weeks. A green plant in the box is not a mis-shipment.
• Compact is the reason to pick it. Red Chameleon stays smaller than Green Chameleon, so it suits a small to medium aquarium where a full-size sword would take over.
• The color costs nutrients. This is a heavy root feeder and it wants light, feeding and ideally CO₂ to hold a strong red. In inert gravel under weak light you get a small green-brown plant — which is a feeding problem, not a difficult plant.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never below. Cover the roots and leave the growing point exposed. A buried crown rots from the center.
• It propagates from floral stalks, not runners. A settled plant sends up a stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
