Eleocharis acicularis dwarf hairgrass forming a dense green carpet foreground plant in a planted aquarium.

Eleocharis Acicularis Vitro Culture

Price
$14.99

The original hairgrass carpet. Eleocharis acicularis spreads by runners into a fine, needle-leaved lawn that stands 3–6 inches — taller and more flowing than the Mini form, so it reads as meadow grass rather than a close-cropped carpet. Dense enough that fry disappear into it. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® (tissue culture) format.

What You’ll Receive

  • Sold as a Tissue Culture plants with vitamin liquid/gel
  • Bag size: Approx. 4 inches
  • Sustainable growth aquarium plants species

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Dwarf Hairgrass
  • Scientific nameEleocharis acicularis
  • Also known as — Needle Spikerush, Hairgrass
  • Origin — Widespread across the Northern Hemisphere
  • Placement — Foreground to low midground
  • Shipped size — 4-inch Vitro Culture® bag; blades short at arrival
  • Mature height — 3–6 in
  • Suits — 10 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Medium

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Medium. Light must reach the substrate, not just the surface
  • CO₂ — Recommended. It roughly halves the time to a closed carpet
  • Water — 68–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate — Required. Root feeder — nutrient substrate or root tabs
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed
  • Propagation — Runners

Grower’s Notes

  • Taller than you may expect. Standard acicularis runs 3–6 inches and flows with the current. If you want a short, flat lawn instead, buy Eleocharis sp. Mini — the difference in final look is substantial.
  • Split the portion into small tufts and plant them half an inch apart. Planted as one mass it takes far longer to close.
  • Trim the carpet once. Cutting the blades back triggers a flush of new runners and thickens the mat.
  • Feed at the roots — runner production stalls without a nutrient substrate or root tabs.
  • Its height and density make it genuinely useful in breeding tanks, where fry need somewhere to vanish. Also available bare-root.

Notes

  • Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation. Unless specific, we don't guarantee aquatic plants will be free of pests, and pesticides, grow emerged or submerge.

Plant is wonderful, custom service...meh.

My plant order (Acicularis/Pusilla/Weeping Moss) got lost in transit for 5 days in 20-30 degree weather in Ohio. They showed up this morning, and were miraculously still bright green and ready to be planted. 5 stars for survival skills! During that time, I emailed...no response. I called the phone number that says "open 24 hrs." on their page...no answer. I left a voice message...no response. Their social media messenger page immediately says to email them as a response to my message, so I did...no response. 1 star for customer service... hence the 3 star review. Will I buy again? Most likely, as I do understand that mail issues are not on the company, and the plants arrived alive and in great condition, but they can surely do far better in responding than the nothing I received.
