Want a grass lawn underwater? Dwarf Hairgrass spreads by runner into a fine, meadow-like carpet — the classic foreground for Iwagumi and nature-style layouts, and the plant most people picture when they imagine a carpeted tank.

You may know it as Eleocharis parvula. That is the trade name — see the note below.

What You’ll Receive

  • Bare-root Plants | small clump portion, bare-root plants

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Dwarf Hairgrass
  • Scientific nameEleocharis pusilla
  • Also known asEleocharis parvula (misapplied trade name)
  • Origin — Australia and New Zealand
  • Placement — Foreground
  • Shipped size — Small bare-root clump portion
  • Mature height — 3–6 in
  • Suits — 10 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Medium

Why two scientific names?

Dwarf Hairgrass has been sold as Eleocharis parvula in the aquarium trade for a very long time, and most hobbyists still know it by that name.

Eleocharis parvula is a real species — but it is a brackish water plant, not suited to freshwater aquariums. Almost everything sold in the hobby under that label is in fact Eleocharis pusilla, a freshwater species.

So the plant you receive is Eleocharis pusilla: the same Dwarf Hairgrass you have always bought, correctly named, and genuinely suited to a freshwater tank.

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Medium to high. Light must reach the substrate for it to carpet rather than stretch
  • CO₂ — Recommended, not required
  • Water — 68–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate — Required. Root feeder — nutrient substrate or root tabs
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Dry start works well
  • Propagation — Substrate runners

Grower’s Notes

  • Split the clump into many small portions. Divide into groups of a few blades and plant them an inch apart. Runners only travel into open substrate, so a single lump takes months longer to fill a foreground than the same plant spread out.
  • Keeping it alive is easy; carpeting it is not. That gap is why this is rated Intermediate. Survival needs little, but a dense low lawn needs strong light at substrate level and usually CO₂ — without both, expect a thin, stretched meadow.
  • Light reaching the substrate is what decides carpet versus stretch. Shaded hairgrass grows long and thin instead of dense and low.
  • Trim the carpet once established. Cutting it back encourages runner growth rather than height.
  • Expect the emersed blades to melt back after planting. New growth comes from the runners, not the original blades.

Want the shorter version? See Dwarf Hairgrass 'Mini', which stays 1–2 in.

Notes

  • Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation. Unless specific, we don't guarantee aquatic plants will be free of pests, and pesticides, grow emerged or submerge.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

There are no words I can say

Seriously I'm pretty sure my comment would get flagged out of how many f-bombs of wonderfulness I can give to this place they are absolutely the lumping greatest people that ever existed. My plans came in perfectly and I will include pictures later on unfortunately I am driving right now but this popped up and I just had to leave a review of how lumping great my experience was.

Everything was packaged perfectly it came even a day sooner than they said it would and for once I found a aquatic plants supplier that does what they say they will do God I love this lumping place

How do you plant this so it stays anchored into the substrate while it gets established?

Aquarium Plants Factory

For Dwarf Hairgrass, bury the small root/rhizome section just under the substrate surface, leaving the green blades exposed above. Since it can float or get uprooted before it establishes, it helps to use small planting weights, plant it in slight depressions, or gently press the substrate around the base. Keeping flow moderate (not blasting the new plantings directly) for the first week or two also helps it root in before you increase circulation.

Alternanthera Rosanervig Mini is a striking, small-leaved cultivar of the popular Alternanthera family, prized for its vivid pink to red coloration and compact growth habit. Ideal for nano tanks and high-impact foreground to midground layouts, this miniature variety features pronounced pink veining on each leaf, adding a dramatic contrast against green aquatic plants.
