It starts flowering before the others wake up. Nymphaea 'Mangkala Ubol' is a hardy water lily bred by Dr. N. Nopchai Charnsilpa in 1997 and voted Best New Lily of 2004. It carries scented creamy yellow to peach blooms 4–6 inches across over deep green pads flecked with burgundy, and it is one of the earliest hardy lilies into flower each year.

What You'll Receive

  • You will get 1 young and freshly harvested water lily tuber
  • All of our water lilies tubers/rhizomes have been inspected before ship out and guaranteed they are viable and perfect to grow in a proper pond environment

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Mangkala Ubol Water Lily
  • Scientific nameNymphaea 'Mangkala Ubol'
  • Origin — Dr. N. Nopchai Charnsilpa, 1997
  • Award — Best New Lily, 2004
  • Type — Hardy water lily
  • Flower — Creamy yellow to peach, 4–6 inches across, pleasantly scented
  • Foliage — Deep green pads variegated with burgundy flecks
  • Bloom season — Exceptionally long; among the earliest hardy lilies to start and among the last to finish
  • Placement — Ponds, container water gardens, or tanks 20 gallons and up; centerpiece

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Sunlight — Full sun for healthy growth and prolific flowering
  • Water depth — 12 to 24 inches; still or gently moving water
  • Substrate — Heavy clay or loam in a wide, shallow pot
  • Planting angle — Hardy rhizome: 45°, growing tip up, at the pot edge pointing toward the center
  • Feeding — Water lily fertilizer tablets through the growing season
  • Overwintering — Hardy. Stays in the pond; move the pot below the freeze line in autumn
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • The season length is the reason to buy it. Most hardy lilies give you a mid-season window. 'Mangkala Ubol' opens well ahead of the pack and keeps going long after most have stopped, which is what won it Best New Lily in 2004.
  • Burgundy-flecked pads carry the display between flushes of bloom — the foliage is doing work here, not just holding the flowers up.
  • Scented, which is uncommon in the yellow-peach range.
  • Tolerates gently moving water, unlike most lilies. Useful if your pond has circulation you cannot avoid entirely.
  • Hardy, so no lifting or indoor storage. Cut back the foliage in autumn and move the pot deeper.
  • Indoors, light is what decides whether you get flowers. Most of these go into ponds, but the plant will grow in a tank of 20 gallons or more. Blooms come only under very bright, sun-like lighting run for a long day — below that you get pads and little else. Those pads arrive fast and need trimming often, or they roof over the surface.

Notes

  • We don't ship dormant roots. Your tuber arrives fresh and actively growing with 1–2 young leaves already emerged — visible proof it's viable before it leaves us. Young pads may start fully submerged and will reach the surface within about a week in good light.
  • Remove yellowing pads and spent flowers as they appear to keep the water clean and push energy into new growth.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

The lilies arrived promptly, all three are healthy and going strong. They are still working on reaching the surface, but they grow very fast and I can't wait to see them bloom one day.

Beautiful

My new favorite water plant. Planted them in fabric bags with layered dirt, sand and gravel substrate in my small pond and they took off. Still blooming and it's the end of September in Maine.

Some advice

I received my plants earlier today, and I put them into my pond. And I know this sounds silly, but I wish they had come with just a small set of instructions. I guess the rest of my review will have to wait until I see how they bloom and grow.

Awesome!

My order was shipped right away but I became worried because my plants were in transit for one day short of two weeks (not the sellers fault) in very severe heat. To my surprise, the plants all arrived in great shape! I have had them for 4 days and the lilies are already growing beautifully! If you are on the fence, I highly recommend a purchase from this store.

Excellent Service

Order process was easy and the website provides plenty of information on how to plant the water lilies. The rhizomes arrived in very good condition and I planted them the next day. They look healthy and I am very excited to see them blooming soon. I bought 2 and received 1 for free (total 3). Thank you!
