Lagenandra Keralensis

Deep green, heavily veined, and larger than most of the genus. Lagenandra keralensis grows broad ovate leaves with a pronounced venation pattern pressed into the surface, on a creeping rhizome. From southwestern India, and a genuine background specimen rather than a foreground plant.

Grower's Notes

• Do not bury the rhizome. The thick creeping stem sits on or just under the substrate surface with roots below it. Buried, it rots — and at this growth rate the plant does not recover.
• It melts like a Crypt. Expect leaf loss after planting or a change in conditions. Leave the rhizome and roots undisturbed; new leaves push out within a few weeks.
• Bigger than the Meeboldii forms. At 8-14 inches this is a background plant, where L. meeboldii stays around 6-10 and works midground. Give it room.
• Feed the root zone. Root tabs under the rhizome do more than any liquid fertilizer for a slow root feeder.
• Grown emersed it produces white or cream spathes — a genuine flowering aroid, and worth trying in a paludarium. Also available as sterile Vitro Culture.
