Myriophyllum Mattogrossense Golden Vitro Culture

Milfoil in pale gold instead of green. Myriophyllum mattogrossense 'Golden' carries the same fine feathered whorls as the standard species, but under strong light the foliage runs very pale yellow to nearly white, sometimes with reddish tips. It is a striking plant and a demanding one — the color comes from low pigment, which makes it slow to recover and quick to show algae.

• Difficulty — Intermediate
• Light — High. Light intensity is what produces the gold; under medium light it reverts toward green
• CO₂ — Recommended. Pale foliage photosynthesizes less, so carbon matters more here than on the green form

• Substrate — Optional. It feeds mainly from the water column

Grower’s Notes

• Put it in a mature tank, not a new one. This is the single thing that decides whether it works. Pale leaves carry little chlorophyll, so the plant cannot outgrow algae — and algae settling on golden foliage destroys the color you bought it for. A stable, established tank with good algae control is close to a requirement.
• Light decides the color. Strong lighting gives pale gold to near-white with reddish tips; weaker light gives ordinary green.
• Plant stems individually an inch apart. Fine whorls shade each other badly when a bunch goes in as one lump.
• Trim and replant the tops. It branches readily from below the cut, and repeated topping builds a dense group.
• Pair it against dark green or red planting — the contrast is most of the effect. The standard green Mattogrossense is far more forgiving if you want the texture without the difficulty.
