Nymphaea August Koch is a hybrid water lily renowned for its large violet-blue flowers and rich history. Named after August Koch, a German water lily hybridizer who, along with George H. Pring, created many new cultivars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This tropical lily, introduced in 1922, stands out for its stunning blooms and easy-care requirements, making it a popular choice among water gardeners.

Key Features:

  • Violet-Blue Flowers: Produces large, vibrant violet-blue flowers that are both beautiful and fragrant.
  • Olive Green Pads: Features olive green leaves that provide a lush backdrop for the striking flowers.
  • Historical Significance: Named after August Koch, the hybrid was created in 1922 at Garfield Park, Chicago, Illinois, and is highly viviparous.

Optimal Conditions:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Water Temperature: Prefers water temperatures between 70°F and 80°F (21°C to 27°C).
  • Planting Depth: Ideal for ponds or containers with still water.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Fertilization: Regular fertilization with water lily fertilizer tablets is necessary to ensure healthy growth and blooming. Add tablets to the soil every few weeks during the growing season.
  • Pruning: Remove dead leaves and flowers occasionally to maintain plant health and encourage new growth.
  • Winter Care: In cooler climates, it is best to lift the plant from the container and store the rhizome in damp sand and peat moss at a temperature of 50-55°F (10-12°C).

Benefits:

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Enhances the visual appeal of any pond or water garden with its stunning violet-blue flowers and lush green foliage.
  • Wildlife Attraction: Attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, contributing to a healthy ecosystem.
  • Fragrance: The flowers emit a pleasant fragrance, enhancing the sensory experience of your garden.

Historical and Botanical Notes:

  • Parentage: The parentage is likely Nymphaea ‘Blue Beauty’ x Nymphaea ‘Mrs. Woodrow Wilson’.
  • Creation: Developed by August Koch and George H. Pring, notable water lily hybridizers of their time.

Conclusion:

Nymphaea August Koch is a spectacular hybrid water lily that brings vibrant color and historical charm to any water garden or pond. Its robust nature, striking violet-blue flowers, and ease of care make it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Enhance your aquatic landscape with the exquisite beauty of Nymphaea August Koch and enjoy the vibrant transformation it brings to your environment.

    PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR WATER LILY

There are two main types of water lilies, tropical and hardy. The differences between tropical and hardy water lilies are a growing habit. Tropical water lilies don't do well in winter. Hardy water lilies, on the other hand, can tolerate the cold. Tropical water lilies tubers must be removed from the pond and stored in moist conditions to come back in the future years. In warm climates, they can remain in the pond.
