Nymphaea Casey Lee Slocum | Purple Tropical Water Lily

Victoria-scale leaves, without the thorns. Nymphaea 'Casey Lee Slocum' is among the largest waterlilies in cultivation — flowers reaching 14 inches across and pads spreading over two feet. Introduced by Leeann Connelly in 1998 and named for the firstborn daughter of Randy Slocum, it carries lavender blooms that fade to white at the center around a golden heart, highly fragrant, and entirely thornless.

Grower's Notes

• Check your pond before you buy. Pads spreading over two feet each means a single plant will dominate anything smaller than a large pond. If the 14-inch flowers are what you are after, give it the scale it needs.
• It rivals the Victoria lilies for size but carries no thorns, which makes it far safer to handle and to keep around fish and wading birds.
• Flowers to 14 inches, which is extraordinary for a Nymphaea and the main reason people seek it out.
• Highly fragrant as well as large — the two rarely come together at this scale.
• Feed generously. A plant producing pads this size runs through nutrients quickly, and flowering suffers first when it runs short.
• Indoors, treat it as a foliage plant you keep cutting. Nothing stops it going into an aquarium and 20 gallons is the practical minimum, but pads that reach two feet outdoors still push hard for the surface indoors, so trimming is constant rather than occasional. The blooms need full-sun-level light over a long day and rarely appear under aquarium lighting — buy it for a pond if the flowers are the point.

Notes
