A tropical that tolerates cold better than most, and propagates itself. Nymphaea × daubenyana is a natural hybrid of N. micrantha and N. nouchali var. caerulea, carrying fragrant star-shaped blue flowers about 4 inches across over large mottled leaves. New plantlets form on the leaf blades, so one plant becomes several without any division work.

What You'll Receive

  • You will get 1 young and freshly harvested water lily tuber
  • All of our water lilies tubers/rhizomes have been inspected before ship out and guaranteed they are viable and perfect to grow in a proper pond environment

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Daubeny's Water Lily
  • Scientific nameNymphaea × daubenyana
  • Parentage — Natural hybrid of N. micrantha × N. nouchali var. caerulea
  • Type — Tropical water lily, viviparous
  • Flower — Striking blue, star-shaped with narrow pointed petals, about 4 inches across, pleasantly fragrant
  • Foliage — Cordate to rounded, up to 12 inches wide; bright green marked with red above, pale brownish-red beneath
  • Placement — Ponds and water gardens; centrepiece

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Sunlight — Full sun to partial shade; at least 6 hours of direct sun
  • Water depth — 12 to 36 inches, in still or slow-moving water
  • Substrate — Heavy clay or loam in a submerged container
  • Planting angle — Tropical tuber: straight up at 90°, crown level with the soil
  • Feeding — Aquatic fertiliser tablets through the growing season
  • Overwintering — More cold-tolerant than most tropicals, but still not frost-hardy. Lift and store warm and frost-free in cool climates
  • Propagation — Foliar proliferation: plantlets form on the leaf blade above the petiole and develop fully once the leaf detaches

Grower's Notes

  • It reproduces on its own leaves. Plantlets appear on the pad above the point where the stem joins, and finish developing once that leaf breaks away. Float detached leaves in shallow water and pot the plantlets once they have roots — most lilies only increase by division, so this is a genuine advantage.
  • Unusually cold-tolerant for a tropical, which widens where it can be grown. It still cannot survive a frozen pond.
  • Large leaves to 12 inches, with red marking above and brownish-red beneath, so the foliage carries interest between flushes of bloom.
  • A natural hybrid rather than a nursery cross, and one of the older blue lilies in cultivation.
  • Wants still water. Keep the pot away from fountains and waterfall outflows.

Notes

  • We don't ship dormant roots. Your tuber arrives fresh and actively growing with 1–2 young leaves already emerged — visible proof it's viable before it leaves us. Young pads may start fully submerged and will reach the surface within about a week in good light.
  • Remove yellowing pads and spent flowers as they appear — though leave any pad carrying plantlets until they are ready to lift.
  • Never release aquatic plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

Beautiful Plant

Very beautiful water lily with great growth and lovely flowers that appear often. I love how well this lily does in my small container water garden that I have on my patio. It fills the container easily and I love how the flowers sit above the water. When one flower is done, another is quickly coming up to take it's place. Plant arrived packed very well and it started growing for me in no time at all. Great company to work with and will definitely buy from again. The water lilies are amazing and I love the wide range of lilies that are available. Price is great too.
