Nymphaea Geena | Blue Tropical Water Lily

Tropical Water Lily: Young Sprouted Tuber

Price
$29.99

Blue flowers with a real scent. Nymphaea 'Geena' is a tropical water lily producing star-shaped blue blooms 4–6 inches across over broad, rounded green pads. The flowers are strongly fragrant, which is less common among the blues than the color alone would suggest.

What You'll Receive

  • You will get 1 young and freshly harvested water lily tuber
  • All of our water lilies tubers/rhizomes have been inspected before ship out and guaranteed they are viable and perfect to grow in a proper pond environment

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Geena Blue Water Lily
  • Scientific name — Nymphaea 'Geena'
  • Type — Tropical water lily
  • Flower — Vivid blue, star-shaped, 4–6 inches across, highly fragrant
  • Foliage — Broad, rounded green pads floating at the surface
  • Placement — Ponds, container water gardens, or tanks 20 gallons and up

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Sunlight — Full sun; at least 6 hours of direct sun to bloom well
  • Water depth — 12 to 36 inches, in still or slow-moving water
  • Substrate — Heavy clay or loam in a submerged container
  • Planting angle — Tropical tuber: straight up at 90°, crown level with the soil
  • Feeding — Aquatic fertilizer tablets through the growing season
  • Overwintering — Tropical. Lift the plant in cold climates and store it warm and frost-free until spring
  • Propagation — Tuber division

Grower's Notes

  • Fragrance is what separates this from the other blues. A good many blue tropicals are scentless or nearly so. 'Geena' is strongly fragrant, so site it within reach of where people actually sit — a scented lily at the far end of a pond is a wasted feature.
  • Wants still water. Site the pot away from fountains and waterfall outflows; lilies dislike turbulence on their pads.
  • Tropical, so it cannot overwinter in a pond that freezes. Lift the tuber before frost or treat it as an annual.
  • Broad pads give good surface cover, shading the water and helping limit algae.
  • Those broad pads become the problem indoors. Surface cover is an asset in a pond and a liability in a tank, so plan on trimming the older leaves regularly. Twenty gallons is the practical minimum. The fragrance is only worth chasing indoors if you can give it sun-like light for a long stretch of the day; short of that, 'Geena' grows as a foliage plant and blooms rarely.
  • Attracts bees and dragonflies, contributing to a balanced pond.

Notes

  • We don't ship dormant roots. Your tuber arrives fresh and actively growing with 1–2 young leaves already emerged — visible proof it's viable before it leaves us. Young pads may start fully submerged and will reach the surface within about a week in good light.
  • Remove yellowing pads and spent flowers as they appear to keep the water clean and push energy into new growth.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

First attempt in growing water lily

I ordered on 5/12/20. And received by 5/16/20. A healthy rhizome with leaves and a bud. I seen the video on the website on how to plant it. Opps! I accidentally broke the bud during planting. But all is well. 😉
I check on her daily and it seem she is settling well in her new home. Looking forward to see her bloom.😊

Tropical Lily

So far looking good. Put the lily in my koi pond in about 18 inches of water. Pads have started growing. They’re almost doubled in size at this point. Still about 16 inches or so to go before they break the surface.

The rhizome was smaller than I expected, but it is growing and producing new leaves. It appears to be healthy and should continue to grow to maturity.

As advertised

The small tuber arrived intact and healthy and is growing in my pond. It's too early to confirm flower variety, but all appears well.
