Nymphaea Tropical Blue

Blue flowers for a warm pond. Nymphaea Tropical Blue is a tropical water lily supplied for its clear blue blooms, held above the water on upright stems in the way tropicals do. It wants sun and warmth, and it will not survive a frozen pond — the tuber comes out before frost.

Grower's Notes

• Blue only exists among the tropicals. There is no such thing as a hardy blue water lily — the genes are not in the hardy side of the genus. If blue is what you want, a tropical and its autumn lift are the price of it.
• Tropical blooms are held above the water on stems rather than floating flat, which makes the color visible from across a pond.
• An indoor tank is possible; an indoor flower is not a given. Twenty gallons and up will hold this lily and it will push pads steadily. Blue flowers indoors take light close to full sun in both strength and length of day — below that the plant simply makes leaves. Either way the pads want cutting back often, or they take the surface over.
• Warmth matters more than for a hardy lily. In a cool pond it does very little until the water climbs into the seventies.
• Lift the tuber before the first frost and store it moist and frost-free, or treat it as an annual. A tropical left in an icing pond is lost.
• The pads shade the water, which limits algae and gives fish cover through summer.

Notes

• We don't ship dormant roots. Your tuber arrives fresh and actively growing with 1–2 young leaves already emerged — visible proof it's viable before it leaves us. Young pads may start fully submerged and will reach the surface within about a week in good light.
