Want a water lily no one else has? Nymphaea 'Wanvisa' produces pink-peach petals mottled and streaked with yellow — no two blooms alike, and unlike any solid-coloured lily. An award-winning hardy hybrid from Dr. Nopchai Charnsilp in Thailand, and one of the most collected lilies in the hobby.

This is a pond plant. Leaf spread reaches 3–5 feet and it needs 12–24 inches of water above the crown, so it suits ponds and large container water gardens — not aquariums.

What You'll Receive

Sold as bare-root rhizome ready to plant:

  • Sold as one live tuber with a new young leaf to ensure viability and active growth.
  • Professionally prepared and inspected for quality before shipping

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Wanvisa Hardy Water Lily
  • Scientific nameNymphaea 'Wanvisa'
  • Origin — Thailand, introduced by Dr. Nopchai Charnsilp in 2010
  • Bloom — 4–6 in across, pink to peach with yellow speckling
  • Leaf spread — 3–5 ft
  • Hardiness — USDA Zones 3–11

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Full sun, 6+ hours daily. Essential for colour and repeat flowering
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 65–80°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Water depth — 12–24 in above the crown
  • Substrate — Required. Heavy garden soil or clay, never potting mix
  • Growth habit — Fully aquatic. Cannot be grown emersed
  • Propagation — Rhizome division
  • Blooming — June through September, dormant in winter

Planting a Hardy Lily

  • Plant in a wide, shallow container rather than the pond bed — hardy rhizomes grow horizontally, and a pot makes seasonal care and relocation far easier.
  • Set the rhizome at a 45° angle near the edge of the pot, with the crown left exposed.
  • Use heavy garden soil with 2–4 fertiliser tablets, then top with 1–2 inches of pea gravel or sand to stop the soil floating. Keep gravel clear of the crown.
  • Start with 6 inches of water above the soil and lower the pot to 12–18 inches as the plant matures.
  • Plant in early spring. Fertilise every 3–4 weeks through the growing season and remove yellowing leaves and spent blooms.

Grower's Notes

  • Never bury the crown. This is the single rule that decides whether a lily thrives or rots.
  • Full sun is not optional. In partial shade it produces leaves and few flowers, which is the most common disappointment with hardy lilies.
  • Variegation varies bloom to bloom and with temperature — that unpredictability is the appeal, but it means no two flowers match the photo exactly.
  • Divide the rhizome to propagate. Lift an established plant in spring and cut the rhizome into sections, each with a growing point and roots. Water lilies do not spread by runners.
  • It goes dormant over winter and returns in spring. A bare pot in January is normal, not a dead plant.

Want to go deeper? Read our complete Nymphaea Water Lily Care Guide.

Notes

  • Bloom colour and variegation may vary depending on lighting, water temperature, and fertilisation. Allow the plant time to establish before expecting consistent blooming patterns.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

Weather?

I received the healthy Rhyzomes at a great price and “planted” 8 days ago. It has been an unseasonably cold spring and cool summer. Barely a week of 80 thus far and average 70 degrees. My pond temp barely hits 70 day and down to 60 nights. . . Not sure if I will have pads and or blooms this year!

Will any of them flourish in only 6-8" water depth? It's a small pondless waterfall but I would love to have a waterlily.

Aquarium Plants Factory

Hi there, honest answer: 6-8" is on the shallow side for the Wanvisa - as a hardy water lily, it does best with 12-24" of water over the crown once mature (young plants can start at 6" and be lowered gradually as they grow, but 6-8" long-term would likely stunt growth and limit blooming). The bigger concern for a pondless waterfall specifically is water movement - hardy water lilies prefer calm, still water, and the constant flow/turbulence from a waterfall feature can stress them and discourage blooming. If you have a calmer pocket away from the main flow, it's worth a try, but for best results a still container or a separate low-flow area would work much better. Happy to help you find a better fit if you let us know more about your setup!

Hello I was wondering if lily's can grow in a aquarium fish tank also how long do the stems grow do you think it is possible to to grow in the fish tank. Thank you for your time

Aquarium Plants Factory

Water lilies like Red Hardy (Nymphaea Wanvisa) are technically pond/bog plants rather than true aquarium plants - they're grown from a tuber and their leaves and flowers are meant to reach and float on the water's surface, with stems that will keep growing until they get there. In a typical aquarium they can work for a while (especially in a tall or open-top tank), but they tend to get quite large over time, need bright light, and don't appreciate being trimmed back the way submersed aquarium plants do. They're really best suited to ponds, tubs, or very tall/open aquariums where the leaves can actually reach the surface.

Which variety of the hardy water lily do you recommend for a small water garden? I’m planning on using a whiskey barrel cut in half and place the potted water lily into the water filled whiskey barrel. Therefore, I don’t want a variety that will get huge.
