Rotala Super Red Mini

A blood-red Rotala at half the leaf size. Rotala rotundifolia 'Super Red Mini' holds a deeper, more saturated red than the standard rotundifolia, on small tightly spaced leaves and dense vertical stems. Planted as a block at the back of a tank it reads as a solid wall of color rather than a scattering of red stems.

Grower’s Notes

• Light is what makes it red, not fertilizer. Under medium light this grows as a perfectly healthy green plant and stays that way. The blood-red color is the whole reason to buy it, and it only appears at the top of the light range — decide whether your tank can deliver that before you plant a block of it.
• Trim and replant the tops. Each cut pushes side shoots below it, and that branching is what turns a handful of stems into a dense stand.
• Plant the stems an inch or so apart rather than sinking the bunch as one. Packed tight, the inner stems are shaded out and shed their lower leaves.
• It arrives emersed-grown and will drop some of that foliage as it converts. Judge the color on new growth after two or three weeks, not on what comes out of the bag.
