Plants That Help Fight Algae in Your Aquarium

Algae and plants compete for the same thing: light and nutrients. A tank packed with fast-growing plants tends to starve algae out before it gets a foothold, which is why "add more plants" is often better advice than any algae treatment on the shelf.

Hornwort

Water Wisteria

Vallisneria

Vallisneria's dense root system and steady leaf growth make it a reliable long-term nutrient competitor, especially useful in tanks with a heavier fish load where excess waste would otherwise feed algae blooms.

Rotala Rotundifolia

Under decent light, Rotala grows fast enough to out-compete algae for nutrients while also giving you a colorful stem hedge. It needs more light and nutrients than the others on this list to really perform, but in a higher-tech tank it's one of the most effective growers around.

If you're dealing with an algae problem right now, Water Wisteria is the fastest way to start pulling nutrients out of the water — it's inexpensive, grows quickly with almost no demands, and gives you visible results within a couple of weeks.
