Plant Profile

• Common name — Anubias Nana
• Scientific name — Anubias barteri var. nana
• Origin — West Africa
• Placement — Midground, on wood or stone
• Mature height — 4–6 in
• Growth rate — Slow

Care

• Difficulty — Beginner. One of the hardiest plants in the hobby
• Light — Low to medium. Bright light means algae on slow-turning leaves
• CO₂ — Not required
• Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
• Substrate — Not required. Attaches to hardscape
• Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed
• Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower’s Notes

• Buy in bulk for coverage, not for speed. Anubias adds roughly a leaf a month, so a fully clothed piece of driftwood is built by mounting many plants at once rather than waiting for a few to spread.
• Never bury the rhizome. Roots can go into substrate; the rhizome cannot. Buried, it rots — the most common way an Anubias is lost.
• Attach with cyanoacrylate gel or cotton thread. Glue is faster across large numbers; thread rots away once the plant has anchored itself.
• Thick leathery leaves resist grazing, which is why Nana holds up in shrimp, snail and community tanks where softer plants get shredded.

Notes

• Aquarium plants are living organisms and may vary slightly in size, color, and shape depending on seasonal growth and farm conditions. Minor cosmetic imperfections may occur during shipping but will not affect the plant's long-term health.
• Do not bury the rhizome of Anubias plants in substrate. Instead, attach the rhizome to driftwood, rocks, or décor using aquarium-safe glue or thread.
• Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
