Want white in a planted tank without paying for a tissue culture gamble? Anubias Pinto is the answer. A variegated cultivar of Anubias barteri var. nana with white and green marbled leaves — rare, compact, and as tough as any Anubias underneath the pattern.

What You'll Receive

Sold as loose bare-root or potted plant:

  • Bare-root Plants: 6+ leaf small portion, loose with visible rhizome
  • Potted Plants: 6+ leaf plant, rooted in rock wool and net pot for easy planting or attachment

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Pinto Anubias
  • Scientific nameAnubias barteri var. nana 'Pinto'
  • Also known as — Anubias Nana Pinto
  • Origin — Cultivated variegated form
  • Placement — Midground, on wood or stone
  • Shipped size — 6+ leaf portion, smaller than mature size
  • Mature height — 3–5 in
  • Suits — 5 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Low to medium. Higher light sharpens the variegation but invites algae
  • CO₂ — Not required. Liquid fertilizer is enough to keep the leaves clean
  • Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate — Not required. Epiphyte — attach the rhizome to hardscape and never bury it
  • Growth habit — Amphibious epiphyte
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • A step up from a plain Anubias, not a difficult plant. White tissue carries no chlorophyll, so a Pinto grows slower than a green nana and has less margin for error. Same care, a little more patience.
  • Never bury the rhizome, and never put glue directly on it. Attach by the roots or the base of a leaf stem — sealing the rhizome under glue suffocates it just as surely as burying it.
  • Shade is a requirement here, not a preference. A plant this slow cannot outpace algae, and algae shows badly on white leaves.
  • Variegation varies leaf to leaf and is never predictable. Expect the occasional near-white or near-green leaf; that is the plant behaving normally.
  • Acclimate it slowly. Pinto is more sensitive to sudden parameter swings than standard Anubias — float the bag, match temperature, and don't rush it in. Also available at small starter size and as sterile Vitro Culture.

Notes

  • Photos are for reference; variegation pattern, leaf count and size vary with every plant — no two Pintos are alike.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

Customers praised this variegated aquatic plant for arriving "healthy" with "extensive root structure" and "beautiful" coloring. Many noted receiving multiple plantlets or larger portions than expected. While most described it as "stunning" with "great quality," a few mentioned less white variegation than hoped or one issue with roots. Thrives in low-tech setups.

  • Expected one plant and received 3 very healthy plantlets. Wish I had ordered more.
  • Ordered bare root expecting single plant, but received clump of 2-4. Such a great deal!
  • Absolutely beautiful in my tank. Worth it!

Beautiful!

Both white marble and pinto are pictured here. I will say the pinto seems to have done slightly worse, however it’s been disturbed more and placed in tougher areas to survive. You can see the front left piece of pinto is doing very well attached to wood, and also the reflection of the piece stuffed in the rock cracks is pinto as well and growing new leaves exponentially. All of the pinto plants I purchased which is quite a few you cannot see, also 2 in the tree you can’t really tell are going to survive and thrive in my tank I can say with certainty. As you can see, it’s also a low tech setup.

My new favorite

Can hardly describe this plant. Amazing. Ordered bare root. Expected one plant and received 3 very healthy smallish plantlets. Was very excited to be able to spread them out around the tank. Wish I had ordered more. Probably will now.

A+++

Just absolutely beautiful. The plants arrived in great condition and I was pleasantly surprised to see extras. I ordered bare root plants expecting to receive a single plant, but received a clump of 2-4. Such a great deal in terms of price for such rare plants! I will be buying more in the future for sure!

Beautiful plant

This is the second Anubias Pinto that I have ordered from APF over the last 6 months. Both have been full beautiful plants. Large for their size. Centerpiece for my new 6 gallon shadow panda shrimp (cherry shrimp too) tank. Highly recommend this plant from APF.

Beautiful

Although it was not as big as I thought it would be it still came in in great condition. Pest free, and vary healthy still.

A great little plant

Creates a nice point of contrast. Very pretty, would recommend. Mine has had some difficulty adjusting to my (hard) water and the edges of a few leaves have curled slightly, but overall it seems to be doing well and is beautiful.

Anubias nana 'Pinto' is a Beauty!

Aquarium Plant Factory is a top-drawer establishment. I bought two pieces of the Pinto and both were of large size, excellent health and color, with rigorous roots -- and the price was very reasonable. Will buy again from APF.
