Willow Moss

The moss for cold tanks. Fontinalis antipyretica — Willow Moss — comes from cool, clear streams across the Northern Hemisphere and prefers water between 60 and 75°F. In an unheated or lightly heated tank, where tropical mosses sulk, this one thrives — growing long, flowing, willow-like fronds off rock and driftwood.

What You’ll Receive

Sold as a loose portion approximately 2" x 2" — ready to tie or attach to any surface using thread, mesh, or glue. Each portion may vary slightly in shape and density due to natural variation.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Willow Moss
  • Scientific nameFontinalis antipyretica
  • Origin — Cool streams and lakes, Northern Hemisphere
  • Placement — Midground, attached to rock, driftwood or mesh
  • Mature height — 4–10 in
  • Growth rate — Medium

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Low to medium. Thrives in shade
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 60–75°F · pH 6.0–7.5. Note the ceiling — this is a cold-water moss
  • Substrate — Not required. Attaches to hardscape
  • Growth habit — True aquatic. Does not grow emersed
  • Propagation — Fragmentation — divide and re-attach

Grower’s Notes

  • The temperature range is the reason to buy it. Most aquarium mosses want tropical warmth. Willow Moss wants 60–75°F — which makes it one of the very few mosses that works in a goldfish tank, an unheated room-temperature setup, or a coldwater biotope.
  • Above 78–80°F it thins and browns. In a tropical community tank, use Java Moss or Christmas Moss instead.
  • Tie or glue it thinly. Thick mats trap detritus and rot from underneath; a thin layer grows across the surface.
  • Flowing fronds give shrimp and fry excellent cover and a large surface for biofilm.
  • Arriving compressed and dark is normal. Rinse gently, place it in clean water, and colour returns within days.

Notes

  • Live aquatic moss may appear slightly compressed or darker upon arrival due to shipping conditions. Simply rinse gently and place it in clean aquarium water; it will regain its vibrant colour and fullness within a few days.
  • Some aquatic plants are restricted in certain U.S. states — check before ordering, and never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

WHAT WE CAN'T GUARANTEE

Even though our plants are very clean, but we can't guarantee they will be 100% pest-free because we cannot be responsible for your aquarium. Please use it at your own risk. We recommended all customers rinse the plants with clean water and quarantine them before use.

Brown and smelly

Opened the bag and was hit with a pretty foul odor. The willow moss was very light and transparent green with brown mixed in. The Java(?) moss mixed in has a nice vibrant green though. I placed into my low tech tank to see what happens. A week later and no changes on the willow moss but the stowaway moss is starting to grow. I’m trying to be patient and not bummed out and give things time.

Long, flowing stems

Willow moss, F. antipyretica grows in large clumps and mats and provides refuge for fish eggs and fry.
It attaches to wood or rocks and eventually creates long, flowing stems.
