Nymphaea Dang Mameaw | Deep Pink Tropical Water Lily

The deeper-colored Mameaw. Nymphaea 'Dang Mameaw', also known as Dang Ma Miew Water Lily, is a day-blooming tropical carrying fragrant deep pink to raspberry-red flowers 4 to 8 inches across, held well above the water. Dang means red in Thai, and that is what separates it from its close relative.

Grower's Notes

• Give it room before you buy. At 3 to 7 feet of spread this is a large lily and will cover a small pond's surface within a season. If space is limited, a dwarf cultivar is the better answer.
• Strongly fragrant, with flowers standing clear of the water so the scent carries.
• Color deepens in strong sun. In partial shade the raspberry tones read closer to plain pink.
• Tropical, so it cannot overwinter in a freezing pond. Lift the tuber before frost or treat it as an annual.
• Closely related to Nymphaea 'Mameaw', which is the lighter pink of the pair. They match closely on size and habit — pick on color depth.
• Twenty gallons is the indoor minimum, and that is a floor rather than a target. It will grow in a tank that size, but with 3 to 7 feet of potential spread you are committing to cutting pads back every week or two. Blooms indoors are unlikely without very high, sunlight-grade lighting over a long photoperiod — most owners grow it outside and use a tank for the foliage.

Notes
