Raspberry-red blooms held high above the water. Nymphaea 'Mameaw', also known as Ma Miew Water Lily, is a day-blooming tropical carrying fragrant pink to raspberry-red flowers 4 to 8 inches across. The flowers rise well clear of the surface, which makes both the color and the scent carry.

Grower's Notes

• Give it room before you buy. At 3 to 7 feet of spread this is a large lily, and in a small pond it will cover the surface within a season. A tub or half-barrel is not enough — look at a dwarf cultivar instead if space is limited.
• Strongly fragrant, and the flowers stand above the water rather than floating, so the scent actually reaches you.
• Shallower planting than many lilies at 6–18 inches, which suits ponds with a planting shelf.
• Tropical, so it will not survive a frozen pond. Lift the tuber before frost or treat it as an annual.
• Closely related to Nymphaea 'Dang Mameaw', which runs to a deeper pink. The two are very similar in size and habit — color depth is the distinction.
• Outdoors for the flowers, indoors for the foliage. It will grow in an aquarium of 20 gallons or larger, but at this spread you will be cutting pads back constantly to keep the surface open. Flowers indoors require light at genuine sunlight intensity over a long day; short of that, expect leaves and no blooms.

Notes
