The Red Tiger Lotus Care Guide: Growing Nymphaea in an Aquarium

Aquarium Nymphaea — Red Tiger Lotus and its relatives — are among the very few plants that produce deep red foliage in a tank with no CO2 and ordinary lighting. They grow from a bulb rather than a rooted stem, which makes them behave differently from everything else you plant.

Set the bulb on the substrate, do not bury it

This is the mistake that loses most bulbs.

Press the bulb into the substrate just far enough that it stays put, leaving the top exposed. A fully buried bulb rots instead of sprouting. If it will not stay down, weight it lightly or wedge it against hardscape until roots anchor it.

Orientation matters less than exposure — if it has already sprouted, plant it with the growth pointing up; if it is dormant with no visible growth, sit it on its side with most of the surface clear.

Under normal conditions new growth appears within 10 to 15 days.

Root tabs are not optional

Nymphaea are among the hungriest root feeders sold for aquariums. In aquasoil or a nutrient substrate they grow strongly with no extra help. In inert gravel or sand they will sprout, produce a few small pale leaves, and stall.

If your lotus is small, green and going nowhere, this is almost always the reason. Push root tabs into the substrate around the bulb and repeat every couple of months.

Colour depends on light and iron together. Strong light with poor root nutrition gives you a stunted red plant; good nutrition under weak light gives you a large green one.

Controlling lily pads

Left alone, a lotus does what a water lily does — it sends leaves on long stems to the surface and spreads pads across it. Those pads shade everything below and the plant stops investing in the submerged leaves you actually want.

The fix is simple and needs to be done consistently. When you see a leaf heading upward on a long stem, cut that stem at the base, near the bulb — not at the leaf. Removing the leaf alone leaves a stump that rots; cutting at the base tells the plant to produce another submerged leaf instead.

Do this every week or two and the plant stays compact and bushy underwater indefinitely.

If you want flowers, do the opposite and let the pads reach the surface. Under strong light or natural sunlight, tropical lilies bloom, though this is far more achievable in a pond than an aquarium.

Nymphaea are fully aquatic

Despite reaching the surface, these plants have no emersed form. They will not grow in a paludarium, a wabi-kusa or a dry start, and they will not survive out of water. The pads float; the plant lives submerged.

Dormancy is normal, and not the end

Nymphaea run natural dormancy cycles. A plant can drop all its leaves and appear to die back while the bulb stays firm and viable.

Leave it in place. Do not throw out a bulb that has gone bare — provided it is still firm rather than soft and foul-smelling, it will normally restart within a few weeks. A rotting bulb is unmistakable: mushy, dark and smelling strongly.

Propagation

Mature plants produce offset bulbs and, in some species, plantlets on the leaves. Nymphaea micrantha is notably viviparous — daughter plants form where the leaf meets the stem. Let a plantlet develop several leaves and its own roots, then detach it and plant it as you would a bulb.

Splitting offsets from the parent bulb works the same way. Do not divide a bulb itself.

Bulb size does not predict plant size

Dwarf species such as Nymphaea micrantha produce naturally small bulbs — much smaller than a Red Tiger Lotus bulb. That is the species, not a poor specimen, and it has no bearing on how well the plant grows.
